Two Men Indicted In Killing Of Homeless Man

Victim Found Naked In Trash Container

WAVERLY, Ohio -- Two men have been indicted on aggravated murder charges in the beating death of a homeless man in southern Ohio.

A third suspect who also was arrested after the Oct. 2 slaying was discussing a possible plea deal with prosecutors and may testify against the two other men, police Chief Larry Roe said.

Martin Baxter, 28, and Matthew Ferman, 22, both of Waverly, were indicted by a Pike County grand jury on Friday. James Trent, 19, of Piketon, will be indicted after negotiations for his testimony are completed, Roe said.

Daniel Fetty, 39, died at a Columbus hospital hours after he was found naked in a trash container. Police said he had been robbed and beaten with boards and bricks.

It was the first slaying in four decades in Waverly, which is about 60 miles south of Columbus. Pike County Prosecutor Rob Junk has said it was among the worst he's dealt with.

All three men were being held in the Ross County jail in Chillicothe on $1 million bond. The men could be sentenced to three to 10 years in prison if convicted of robbery and 20 years to life in prison if convicted of murder.

Fetty had recently begun working at a restaurant and was saving for an apartment, acquaintances said. He had been living out of his car while he worked at the restaurant making salads and washing dishes.
